Piața Avram Iancu, Cluj-Napoca: A Visitor's Guide to the Square

Piața Avram Iancu is the square in central Cluj-Napoca where the Dormition of the Theotokos Orthodox Cathedral, the Avram Iancu statue and the Lucian Blaga National Theatre stand within a few minutes of each other. Give it 20 to 30 minutes as a standalone stop, or fold it into a walk between Piața Unirii and Central Park.

This page covers where the square sits, how to walk to it from the old town, what to look for on each side and what lies within easy reach. It treats the square as one place rather than a list of city sights, so you can decide how much time to give it on your own route. For the wider set of sights, see Cluj-Napoca Attractions: 13 Visitor Guides.

What Piața Avram Iancu is and where it sits

Piața Avram Iancu is one of the main squares of Cluj-Napoca, named after the Transylvanian Romanian lawyer and revolutionary Avram Iancu. It sits in the central district, with the Orthodox cathedral on one side and the national theatre close by, which makes it easy to find on foot.

The square works as a junction rather than a single monument: you pass through it on the way from the old town to Central Park and Cetățuia Hill, and the buildings around it are the reason to slow down. Because it is open ground with roads on some sides, plan to cross at the marked crossings and use the pavements.

How to reach the square on foot from Piața Unirii and the old town

From Piața Unirii, head east through the centre until the Orthodox cathedral comes into view; the cathedral sits on the square, so you will see it as you approach. If you are coming from the railway station, check the route on the city map before setting out so you arrive on the right side of the centre.

Cluj-Napoca's city map shows the square within the central grid, with the main roads running past it, so you can check the exact position before you set out. Use the map to match your stop to the square rather than guessing which exit leads towards the cathedral.

The Dormition of the Theotokos Orthodox Cathedral on the square

The Dormition of the Theotokos Orthodox Cathedral is the building most visitors come to see on Piața Avram Iancu. Its exterior is large and ornate, while the interior is smaller than the outside suggests, so allow a few minutes inside rather than planning a long visit.

The cathedral is an active place of worship, so dress and behave accordingly and keep quiet if a service is under way. Check the notice at the door before you go inside if a full visit matters to you.

The Avram Iancu statue in front of the cathedral

The statue of Avram Iancu stands in front of the Dormition of the Theotokos Orthodox Cathedral, so you see the two together as you approach the square. It is a good meeting point and a natural place to pause before crossing to the theatre side of the square.

The statue is outdoors and free to see at any time, which makes the square a useful stop even if the cathedral is busy when you pass. Look at it from the cathedral steps for the best view of the figure against the building behind.

The Lucian Blaga National Theatre and National Opera building

Across from the cathedral stands the Lucian Blaga National Theatre, which shares its building with the National Opera. The theatre stages a mix of classic and modern performances.

If you want to see a performance, book through the theatre's own box office or website before you travel. The building itself is worth a look from the square even if you are not attending a show.

The market stalls in front of the cathedral

A market often sets up in the square in front of the cathedral, selling local products such as traditional clothing, wooden kitchen utensils, souvenirs and food. It is a good place to pick up a small gift, but the stalls are not there every day, so treat them as a bonus rather than a reason for the visit.

If the market is running, check what you are buying before you pay, and carry some cash in case small sellers prefer it. If the market is not running, the square still works as a short stop on your walk.

How long to allow and how the square fits into a Cluj walk

Allow 20 to 30 minutes for Piața Avram Iancu: a few minutes at the statue, a short look inside the cathedral and a walk past the theatre frontage. Add more time if you catch a market or decide to book a theatre ticket.

The square fits neatly between Union Square and Central Park, so a natural half-day walk runs from Union Square through the old town to Piața Avram Iancu, then on to the park and up Cetățuia Hill. Keep the square as a crossing point rather than a destination in its own right, and you will have time for the places around it.

What is nearby: Central Park, Cetățuia Hill and Tailors' Tower

Sponsored

Central Park Simion Bărnuțiu is a short walk from the square and has free entry, so it is an easy next stop after the cathedral. The park was laid out in the nineteenth century and is the largest public park in the city, with paths and a lake.

Cetățuia Hill rises above the city and is reached by a flight of stairs; the climb can be tiring, but the view from the top takes in the city centre, and it is a good spot for sunset. From the square, head towards the hill and follow the stairs up.

Tailors' Tower is another nearby landmark, and the walk between the square, the tower and the park makes a compact loop. If you have time for one more indoor stop, the Cluj-Napoca Botanical Garden (Grădina Botanică Alexandru Borza) is a short ride away and has glasshouses and a Japanese garden.

Is Piața Avram Iancu worth a stop?

Yes, if you are already walking between Union Square and Central Park. The square gives you the Orthodox cathedral, the Avram Iancu statue and the national theatre in one compact stop, and it costs nothing to look around.

Build it into a route rather than making a special trip: start at Union Square, walk east to the square, then continue to the park and up Cetățuia Hill. Check the cathedral and theatre for current opening times and performance schedules before you set out.
