Bridge of Lies (Podul Minciunilor), Sibiu: What to See and How Long It Takes

The Bridge of Lies, or Podul Minciunilor, is a cast-iron pedestrian bridge in Sibiu's historic centre, spanning Ocnei Street between the Small Square (Piața Mică) and the Large Square (Piața Mare). It takes a couple of minutes to cross, so plan it as the link between the two squares rather than a destination in itself. This page fixes where the bridge sits, what to look at on it and from it, and how to build a short old-town walk around it.

Where the Bridge of Lies sits in Sibiu

Piața Mică and Piața Mare sit side by side in the old town, and the bridge is the short link between them.

If you are in Piața Mare (Large Square), head for the side of the square where it meets Ocnei Street and you will come to the bridge. From Piața Mică, the crossing takes you up to the level of the Large Square. Both approaches are on foot through the old-town streets.

How to walk to it from Piața Mare and Piața Mică

Treat the two squares as your compass. From a Piața Mare (Large Square), Sibiu building such as the Brukenthal National Museum, Sibiu, head for the corner where the square meets Ocnei Street. From Piața Mică, Sibiu, walk up towards the crossing and continue over the bridge.

If you are walking the old town with a map or an app, look for Ocnei Street and the two squares rather than searching for the bridge by name, since the Romanian name Podul Minciunilor may not appear on every map. A Sibiu Attractions: 12 Visitor Guides list of what to see in the city helps you place it in a wider route around the old town.

What to look for on the bridge and from it

The bridge is a cast-iron pedestrian bridge over Ocnei Street. Look down over the parapet to the street below and the roofs around it, then turn and look at the two squares on either side. The crossing is short; the walk away from it is the reason people stop to look at all.

Sibiu's old town is laid out as squares linked by short passages and streets. The bridge is the direct link between Piața Mică and Piața Mare, and walking from one square to the other is how it fits into a day.

How much time to allow, and when it is busiest

Allow a couple of minutes to cross and a few minutes to stop and look down. That is enough to take in the street below and the two squares, so give it a slot in a walking route rather than a morning of its own. Anyone planning a city break around Sibiu's squares should treat the bridge as a link between them.

Is there a ticket or opening time?

The bridge is a public pedestrian crossing between the two squares, so you can walk over it on your way to or from either square without planning around a schedule. If you want to know what else is on in Sibiu while you are there, the city's visitor app is a sensible place to check.

What is within a short walk

The bridge links straight to Piața Mare and Piața Mică. On the Piața Mare side you are close to Sibiu's main public buildings, including the Lutheran Cathedral in Sibiu and the Council Tower. The Piața Mică end drops you into the Small Square.

For a longer walk, the Brukenthal National Museum on Piața Mare holds paintings and historic rooms, while the Museum of History Sibiu (Casa Altemberger) is a short hop away. Families often pair a square with the Natural History Museum Sibiu. A standard old-town loop takes in these buildings and can bring you back over the bridge.

Other sights within the old town include the Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral and the Museum of Pharmacy, while Parcul Sub Arini is further out. The ASTRA Museum Sibiu is a bus or drive away, not a stroll.

Use the bridge the way the old town does: to step from one square to the other. Cross it, look down Ocnei Street, and combine it with the buildings at each end rather than giving it a slot of its own.
