Iași sightseeing: plan the palace, the churches and the free parks

Iași's sights divide sharply: the Palace of Culture demands two to three hours and an entrance fee, while Copou Park and Golia Monastery cost nothing. Most of the standouts cluster within walking distance of Bulevardul Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt, but Copou sits on a hill above the university, so treat the climb as part of the visit.

Book the Palace of Culture first if art and history are your priority — museums share the neo-Gothic building, including paintings attributed to Caravaggio and Veronese and a mammoth skull. Then walk the boulevard for the Metropolitan Cathedral and the compact Three Hierarchs Church, whose carved facades are picked out in blue and gold.

Copou rewards a slower hour: Eminescu's lime-tree with his bust, the Obelisk of the Lions, and the small Eminescu museum in the park, open Tuesday to Sunday with letters and the poet's two towers standing for Love and Friendship.
