Planning Romania's Regions: Transylvania, Wallachia and Beyond

13 guides

Transylvania draws the clearest routes: Brașov, Sibiu and Sighișoara form a chain through the southern Carpathians, with Bran and Râșnov reachable on a single bus day. Farther north, Crișana centres on Oradea and the Apuseni Mountains, while Moldavia holds Iași and the painted monasteries of Bucovina.

Trips often go wrong at the edges. Wallachia is split by the Olt into Muntenia and Oltenia, so Bucharest and Craiova belong to different halves of the same historic province. Banat is divided between Romania, Serbia and Hungary, and Moldavia is not the Republic of Moldova.

Planning around these regions, rather than a single list of sights, keeps you from crossing the country twice. Group stops by province and the distances start to make sense.

Transylvania

  • Transylvania: Where It Is and What to See on a Trip

Transylvania is a region of central and north-western Romania inside the arc of the Carpathian Mountains, not a country of its own. Plan a trip around Brașov, Sibiu and Sighișoara for medieval centres, add Cluj-Napoca for flights, then choose castles or Saxon villages depending on whether you drive.

  • Transylvania Holidays: How to Plan a First Trip

A first Transylvania holiday works best as a route, not a checklist: land in Bucharest or Cluj-Napoca, give Brașov two nights, link Sinaia, Bran and Râșnov by car, and add Sibiu, Sighișoara and a Saxon village day if you have a week.

  • Transylvania Itinerary: A 5–7 Day Loop by Car or Train

A practical five- to seven-day Transylvania loop: two nights in Brașov, a night in Sighișoara, two in Sibiu, with Bran and Râșnov on one bus day and honest train and road times.

  • Transylvania Map: Towns, Castles and Villages for Your Trip

Transylvania is a region inside central Romania, not a country, and the visitor map that matters is a short chain of towns and castles running through the southern Carpathians. This guide places Brașov, Sibiu and Sighișoara, adds Bran, Râșnov and Corvin Castle, and shows which Saxon villages fit between them.

  • Transylvania Tours: How to Choose Between Group, Private and Escorted Trips

Transylvania tours come in two very different shapes: an escorted multi-day holiday built around Bucharest and Brașov, and a single long day in a car from Bucharest. This guide sets out what each one covers, how much of the day goes to driving, and which questions to settle before you book.

Country-wide guides

  • Regions of Romania: A Traveller's Guide to the Historic Regions

Romania's historic regions are the labels that actually help you plan: Transylvania for Saxon towns and castles, Wallachia for Bucharest, Moldavia and Bucovina for painted monasteries, Maramureș for wooden churches, Banat and Crișana for western cities, and Dobrogea for the coast. Here is what each one contains and which to pick.

  • Banat, Romania: A Practical Guide to the Region and Its Villages

Banat is a historic province now divided between Romania, Serbia and a small part of Hungary. Romanian Banat holds the Czech villages of Sfânta Elena, Gârnic, Ravensca, Rovensko, Bigăr, Eibenthal and Sumita, set among karst hills, plum orchards and the Nera valley. This guide explains what the region is and how to plan a visit around those villages.

  • Crișana, Romania: Oradea, the Apuseni Mountains and What to See

Crișana is the historical region of north-west Romania centred on Oradea, running from the Apuseni Mountains and their caves to the thermal springs of Bihor. This guide explains where it sits, why Oradea works as a base, which caves and parks are named, and how long the region realistically needs.

  • Dracula's Castle Tour: What the Trip Covers and How to Choose One

Most Dracula's castle tours in Romania centre on Bran Castle, the fortress above the Bran Gorge in Brașov County, and multi-day versions add Sighișoara, Biertan, Sibiu and Peleș. Here is how each stop works, how you get to Bran by road from Brașov, and what to confirm with an operator before you pay.

  • Map of Romania for Visitors: Regions, Cities and Routes

A map of Romania read the way a traveller needs it: the historical regions, the town that anchors each one, the Carpathian arc and the Danube, and how to group a trip so you are not crossing the country twice.

  • Moldavia, Romania: Iași, Bucovina's Painted Monasteries and Neamț

Moldavia is the eastern Romanian region that holds Iași, Suceava, Târgu Neamț and the painted monasteries of Bucovina. This guide separates it from the Republic of Moldova, names the towns that anchor a route and shows how trains, buses and roads link them.

  • Oltenia, Romania: What to See in Craiova and the Region

Oltenia is a historical province and geographical region in south-western Romania, not a country. Craiova anchors most visits, with the Oltenia Museum of History and Archaeology, the monasteries of Gorj county and the Horezu area as the main reasons to travel beyond it.

  • Wallachia, Romania: Where It Is and What to See There

Wallachia is the historical region that holds Bucharest and the southern plain, split by the Olt into Muntenia and Oltenia. This guide explains where its edges fall, which towns and castles sit inside it, and how to string Bucharest, Târgoviște, Curtea de Argeș and the Prahova Valley into a route north to Transylvania.
