Shopping in Sibiu: Where to Shop and What to Buy

Shopping in Sibiu fits into a single afternoon: one pedestrian boulevard, two connected squares and a Lower Town of small businesses, all within easy walking distance. For the sightseeing side of the same streets, see Things to Do in Sibiu, and for the squares and lanes themselves see the Sibiu Old Town guide.

Sibiu is split into an Upper Town on the plateau and a Lower Town below it, and its shops follow that division. Most of the browsing sits in the Upper Town along the main pedestrian street and around the two squares, while the smaller local businesses are scattered through the streets below. Plan the walk so you drop from one level to the other once rather than climbing back and forth.

What shopping in Sibiu actually looks like

Shopping here is a morning or an afternoon, not a day. The Upper Town concentrates everything a visitor wants into a short loop: the pedestrian shopping street, Strada Nicolae Bălcescu, Piața Mare (Large Square) and Piața Mică (Small Square), all within a few minutes of one another. The Lower Town below adds the smaller shops and galleries where local businesses sit, reached by lanes and stairways rather than a single street. For the layout of the squares and lanes, see the Sibiu Old Town guide.

Treat it as two purchases and you will use the time well. Browsing clothes, souvenirs and gifts is quick work along the boulevard and the squares. Buying crafts, textiles or pottery takes longer because the better pieces are in galleries and workshops spread across the centre. Decide before you set out which of those you are actually doing.

Strada Nicolae Bălcescu: the main shopping boulevard

Strada Nicolae Bălcescu, the pedestrian boulevard, is Sibiu's main shopping street and the natural place to start. It runs as a broad walk lined with colourful buildings, shops and restaurants, and it leads towards Piața Mare, Sibiu's main square. Give it an hour if you like browsing, or twenty minutes if you are heading straight for the craft galleries.

Be clear about what the boulevard is for. It is the busiest, most visitor-facing shopping in town, and the restaurants along it lean touristy, so eat elsewhere and spend your money on the shops or on the squares further along. The trade-off is convenience against character: everything is here, but this is not where the interesting craft pieces are.

Piața Mare and the shops around the Large Square

Piața Mare, the Large Square, is the starting point for most of the centre's sights, with the Brukenthal National Museum, the Lutsch House and the Council Tower all close by. Its edges carry shops, and Habermann Markt is listed among the places to shop in the city, making the square a sensible base for the morning.

The square rewards a slow circuit rather than a dash through the middle. The buildings enclosing it are among the best preserved in town, so walk the full perimeter and glance into the archways and side entrances where small shops sit. Note where you want to return, then carry on; you will pass back through the square at the end of the day.

Piața Mică and the walk under Liars Bridge

Piața Mică, the Small Square, is the quieter of the two main squares and the natural second stop on a shopping walk. It is less famous than Piața Mare but charming, ringed by centuries-old buildings, and its cafés make a reasonable pause in the middle of the circuit. Small shops line the edges and the passages that link it to the larger square.

Liars Bridge, the Bridge of Lies, connects the two sections of Piața Mică and serves as an access point between the Upper Town and the Lower Town. It is not an imposing monument, but it is the hinge of the route and the point where you choose: turn back into the Upper Town or continue descending via the Sibiu Old Town lanes. Take the descent once and use it as the second half of your shopping rather than looping twice.

The Lower Town: small shops and local businesses

The Lower Town is where the smaller businesses sit, reached through twisted lanes and alleyways below the Upper Town. It has fewer grand buildings, but it carries more local charm, and wandering its colourful streets is the part of Sibiu many visitors remember best. If you are shopping for something other than standard souvenirs, this is where to look.

Give the Lower Town time and no fixed list. The alleys connect in unexpected ways, so pick a direction, follow the cobbles and accept that you will double back once or twice. Treat it as the browsing half of the day and the galleries above as the buying half, so you are not carrying purchases up and down the stairways between them.

For crafts rather than generic gifts, head to the galleries. Galerie de Artă Populară and Lullula Art Shop are both listed among the city's shopping places, and Casa Artelor, an art gallery installed on the ground floor of the house known as the home of arts, occupies four or five rooms in the centre. These are the stops to plan around if popular art and similar pieces are what you came for.

Go in with a rough idea of what you want and let the galleries set the pace. Stock and displays change, so the sensible approach is to see what each shop actually carries rather than arriving with a fixed list. If a particular piece matters to you, plan to visit while you are in this part of the centre rather than criss-crossing town later.

Cibin Market and buying like a local

A market stop makes an early start worthwhile. The Cibin Market appears among the places to shop in Sibiu on the TripAdvisor shopping list, and the Sibiu Market is described by a reviewer as somewhere they went first thing for breakfast, with men already in the market bar drinking by mid-morning. Go before the rest of the shopping circuit rather than after it.

This is the one part of the day where you are buying food rather than crafts, so keep it separate in your mind. It suits a breakfast stop and a look at what local producers are selling, not a full shopping session. Afterwards, walk back up into the squares and start the browsing circuit proper.

A walking order that avoids backtracking

Run the circuit in one direction: start on Strada Nicolae Bălcescu, cross Piața Mare, pass into Piața Mică and cross Liars Bridge down into the Lower Town. Then climb back once at the end, or finish with a slow return through the Upper Town if you still have purchases to make. Done this way, you see each street once and carry your bags downhill, not up.

Allow roughly a half day for the full route at an unhurried pace, with longer if the galleries hold your attention. A quick pass along the boulevard and through both squares takes around two hours. If you want the route mapped stop by stop, the Sibiu map sets out the squares, streets and stairways so you can see where the levels connect before you start.

Practical points: lei, cards and when to go

The browsing route is short enough to combine with the rest of your day in Sibiu, so there is no need to dedicate a whole day to shops. Set aside the market for the morning and the galleries for later, and you can see the squares on the same walk.

Plan the day around the market first and the shops second, since the market is the one part of the circuit that suits an early start. If a particular purchase matters, note the shop on the first pass and return to it rather than carrying bags around the whole loop.

Which half of the day do you spend shopping?

Decide between browsing and buying, then build the route around it. If you want clothes, gifts and a pleasant walk along the boulevard, the two squares fill a couple of hours. If you want crafts, textiles or popular art, start at the galleries around Piața Mare and give the Lower Town the rest of the morning.

Whichever you choose, walk it in one direction and finish below the Upper Town. Check the day and the individual shop before a long walk, and keep cash for the market. The shopping is compact enough that a wrong turn costs minutes rather than the afternoon.
